Course Description:
This course is designed to focus on the science of food and nutrition. Experiences will include food safety and sanitation, culinary technology, food preparation and dietary analysis to develop a healthy life style with pathways to career readiness. Laboratory based experiences strengthen comprehension of concepts and standards outlined in Sciences, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education.
Course Curriculum:
The following curriculum will be taught throughout the semester: Kitchen Equipment & Management, Kitchen Safety & Sanitation, Dietary Guidelines & MyPlate, Carbohydrates & Fiber, Proteins & Fats, and Vitamins Minerals & Water.
Who can take this class?
Foods and Nutrition I is a semester long class and is offered to 9th-12th graders. No prerequisites are required to take this class.

Make up a cooking lab:
If you missed a cooking lab at school you can make it up at home. Please do the following:
1. Download and complete "Makeup Cooking Lab" worksheet.
2. Prepare the recipe missed at home.
3. Show the teacher the completed food. That can be done either by bringing in a sample/picture or emailing a picture.
4. Turn in worksheet along with picture/sample of food.
No makeup cooking lab will be accepted without proof of the food cooked and the makeup cooking lab sheet.

1. Download and complete "Home Cooking" worksheet.
2. Prepare a recipe. (it can be anything as long as it is not a dessert item).
3. Show the teacher the completed food. That can be done either by bringing in a sample/picture or emailing a picture.
4. Turn in worksheet, recipe used, and picture/sample of food.

Extra Credit Project Ideas...
Each student is allowed to complete one extra credit project per term. There are several projects to choose from, each varying in point value. Choose the project that suits your needs, complete and turn in before the end of each term.
